Does your car do any of this? This is the fault list owners actually describe.

If several of these match your car, this is very likely your problem. Central locking - the classicDoors lock fine but will not unlock - not with the fob, not with the dash button. You end up putting a window down and reaching in. The reverse: unlocks fine but will not lock, so you are locking with the key in the door every time.

You press lock and only the fuel flap opens. Indicators flash to confirm lock or unlock, so the fob is clearly talking to the car, but the doors do not move. This is the big one - it is what tells you the fob and key are not the problem. Door locks buzz, whirr or make a noise but do not lock. Deadlocking stays on: the car deadlocks and you cannot open it from inside, or the deadlock warning light stays lit permanently.

Boot or tailgate release stops working while the doors still lock and unlock. Works every other press - twice, sometimes three times on the fob. Perfect on a cold morning, stops after an hour of running. Or the exact opposite: dead first thing, fine by lunchtime. Started occasional, now most of the time, visibly worse month by month. New fob, new fob battery, fob re-synced, new door actuators fitted - and it still does it. Wipers and washersWipers will not switch off, or stop and then start again on their own.

Rear wiper runs on its own after switch-off, until the car has sat for a few minutes. Wipers come on by themselves when you unlock the car or turn the key. Wipers do not park - they stop halfway up the screen. Rear wiper dead while the fronts work normally. Washers do not pump, front or rear or both, but the wipers still sweep a dry screen.

Heated screens and mirrorsHeated rear window does nothing. The button lights up, the screen stays frozen. Heated windscreen dead where one is fitted. Heated mirrors stay cold while the rear screen works, or the other way round. Heated rear screen works for a minute then cuts out, or only works on some days. LightsInterior or courtesy lights do not come on when a door opens, or will not go off and flatten the battery overnight. Interior or exterior lights turning on and off at random with nobody touching anything. Lighting faults that come and go with good bulbs and good switches. Sidelights, dipped beam or a whole lighting circuit dead with good bulbs and good fuses. Indicators or hazards behaving oddly - not flashing, flashing fast, or flashing when they should not. Starting and runningWill not start at all - no crank, or it cranks and nothing happens, and it is not the battery. Cuts out while driving, or will not restart when hot. Anti-start, anti-theft or immobiliser message on the dash. Fine nine mornings out of ten, dead on the tenth, fine again after an hour.

Other circuitsHorn does not work - fuse good, horn good, nothing on press. Electric windows stop responding, all of them, intermittently, or just one side. Cooling fan not running when it should, or running when it should not and will not stop. Glow plugs or pre-heat not working on diesels - hard cold starting, glow light behaving wrongly.

Air conditioning or climate faults with no leak found and no compressor fault found. Your garage has already replaced the switch, motor, actuator, key fob or loom and it is still there. The main dealer has quoted you for a complete new unit plus programming, and the price made your eyes water.

If you or your garage have already had a scanner on it This is what tends to show up: Open circuit or continuous open circuit logged against a circuit where the wiring tests fine, the fuse is good, and the component has already been swapped or bench-tested. No communication with the module at all - the tool sees the car but cannot talk to this unit.

Faults in several unrelated systems at once - body, comfort, lighting and communication codes together. This is the one that costs people the most, because each code sends you after a different part. Codes that clear and come straight back, or return a few days later, without the symptom ever going away.

Live data that looks correct - the unit is commanding the output, the tool agrees, and nothing happens at the other end. If that is what you are looking at, the problem is very likely inside the unit rather than out on the car.

I diagnose and repair it at component level, on the bench, on your original unit. Why a second-hand unit will not fix this These particular units are among the part numbers the trade generally cannot clone or transfer. A used unit from a breaker will not simply plug in, because the data in it belongs to the car it came out of. A new unit from the dealer has to be programmed to your vehicle, which is where the cost lands. Repairing your original unit is usually the only route that keeps your existing immobiliser data, your keys and your coding exactly as they are.

It goes back in as your unit, on your car, with your keys. No programming, coding or dealer visit needed afterwards. Fault codes These are codes commonly seen alongside the faults listed above. They are reported by independent module repairers working on this family of unit. They are not a diagnosis on their own - codes vary between models and software levels, and the same fault can log different codes on different cars.

If you have one of these stored, it is worth reading the symptom list above and seeing whether your car behaviour matches. The same goes for the Peugeot 308 T9 and the Citroen Berlingo III, where I have seen the family fitted but have not confirmed it number by number. Most units go back the same day they arrive if they land before midday. Your unit goes on the bench, the fault is found, and it is repaired at component level.

I will tell you what I found either way. This service preserves the original recorded mileage held by the module. The stored reading is carried across exactly as it stands. Your immobiliser data, your keys and your coding stay exactly as they are. Send yours to TF10 8BN.
